Smoke Alarm, Fire Extinguisher, and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Location Placement

Prudential Alarm suggests the placement of sensors and extinguishers to assure maximum effectiveness and safety for your family.

When installing Fire and Carbon Monoxide Sensors and Fire Extinguishers, placement is essential for maximum effectiveness and safety for your loved ones.

  • Carbon Monoxide sensors should be placed on each living space floor. Placing the sensors near potential sources and sleeping areas allows for early detection and alerts, allowing loved ones to seek safety in the event of a triggered alarm.
  • Fire Detectors or Sensors should be placed on each floor in the following areas: basement (if applicable) near any potential source, main living areas, and each of the bedrooms. Fire Sensors, including a light source, should be placed in the hallways and stairways to assist in evacuating your loved ones should the need arise.
  • Fire Extinguishers should be placed in the areas of potential fire sources. Fire extinguishers vary depending on their intended use (Types) and should be placed accordingly.

Fire extinguishers come in two types: Rechargeable and Disposable. Rechargeable extinguishers may be reused after service. Disposable extinguishers must be replaced after the pin is pulled.

Prudential Alarm recommends storing at least one fire extinguisher on each floor of your home as a companion to our fire detection appliances. Type A extinguishers should typically be stored close to living areas. Prudential suggests storing combination A-B-C Fire extinguishers where there is a mix of flammable materials and sources, say the kitchen or garage areas of your home.

Select the most significant size extinguisher you and your family can lift and operate; varying sizes depending on location and the potential user may be helpful in the event of a triggered alarm. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement, mounting and proper use.

P – PULL the pin
A – AIM low, at the base of the fire
S – SQUEEZE the lever slowly and evenly
S – SWEEP the nozzle from side to side

Additional tips in the event you have a fire situation:

  1. Alert proper fire professionals before or in conjunction with attempting to extinguish the fire yourself. Fires are unpredictable and routinely overcome trained professionals. Do not risk your life or the lives of your loved ones.
  2. Keep the room’s exit at your back at all times. This is in the event the fire gains the upper hand, and you need to get out quickly.
  3. Leave immediately if you feel the fire is becoming hard to control or the room you are in fills with smoke.
  4. Check your extinguishers monthly to ensure they are complete and in total working order.
  5. Replace or recharge used extinguishers immediately after use. Don’t wait until later!
  6. Never re-enter your home until the fire department says it’s safe. Let the fire professionals determine if the fire is fully extinguished.
